And the golf raffle winner is …

… Alan Lesky.

Robert Strauss drawing the winner’s number.

A random drawing was held Sept. 4 at the house of Robert Strauss, who will be leading the reunion’s Schoolbus Tour of Memories on Oct. 12, the day after the reunion. Dozens of slips of paper bearing a number for each purchased chance were put in a Phillies hat held above Strauss’ head, so he couldn’t peek (not that he knew who had which numbers).

The number 27 was drawn, the master list was unfolded, and No. 27 was found to be one of 10 chances purchased by Lesky.

Not a shock, since Lesky bought twice as many as anyone else.

“Awww shucks! Maybe I’ll purchase more tickets at the 75th Reunion!” quipped fellow raffle buyer Ben Paradee after learning of Lesky’s win.

The prize is four rounds of golf at Woodcrest Country Club, playable from now till the end of 2020.

Thanks to all who participated, since funds will help enhance the event, including the inviting of teachers, as well as support the website and the free Class of 69 Directory.

Recalling departed classmates

We’ll do our best to honor lost classmates at the 50th reunion.  A video-and-music tribute is planned for all to see. All the verified names — sadly, more than 120 — will be displayed at a decorated table. And reminders will be posted about how to access this website’s extensive R.I.P. gallery. (Another exists on the reunion’s Facebook page.)

Ours was a huge high school class. With 860 students officially graduating in June 1969, it was the biggest at any high school in Cherry Hill, N.J., history. The Class of 1970 was the first to be split between East and West.

But even before graduation, we lost John McWeeney, who died in a winter car crash. Over the next half-century, many more died too soon.

Earlier start for reunion

6:30 p.m. Mark that down. That’s the new starting time for the 50th reunion of Cherry Hill West’s Class of 69 at Woodcrest County Club on Friday, Oct. 11. The ending time has also changed, to 11:30 p.m.

A cocktail hour with a cash bar will feature butlered hors d’oeuvres. Then at 7:30, guests will move to the main ballroom for more conversation, food stations, music and dancing.

Hurry, if you’d like to enter the 50th reunion’s golf raffle, and possibly win four rounds of golf at Woodcrest Country Club in Cherry Hill. The deadline to enter is Tuesday, Sept. 3, so it’s too late to mail a check ($10 per chance).

If you use PayPal or a credit card, however, the reunion will be notified of your order in minutes, and that will make you eligible for the raffle.

The drawing, open only to members of Cherry Hill West’s Class of 69, is early to let the winner arrange to play this year. An optional tee time has been reserved for the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 12, the day after the reunion. The rounds do not have to be played in 2019.

So be sure to enter right away! Check out “A Full List of Reunion Choices” if you haven’t registered for the reunion, or just pick “Golf Raffle Ticket” if you have.
